Delaware Library Access Services (DLAS) is a service via a public library in Delaware & in conjunction with NLS (National Library Service for the Blind & Print Disabled, Library of Congress) for qualifying patrons who need accessible materials.
Qualifying patrons who cannot physically hold a book, read the book, and have other disabilities that limit them from using regular services (temporary included) can apply for this service through DLAS.
Many qualifying patrons fall under the term “Print Disabled”. Print Disabled could be someone with a temporary or permanent physical disability who has no ability to hold a book; for example an individual with cerebral palsy, someone who had a stroke, or is in aging facility that does not have the strength to hold a book. Children with disabilities also qualify for this program. There are no age restrictions.
The “player” (device) gives the person as close to real experience of reading a book. Play, pause, bookmark, change speed, navigate, descriptions of pictures, freedom to customize to their liking, etc. It enables the patron to experience the joy of reading independently.
