Delaware Library Card Campaign

First Lady Tracey Quillen Carney, Honorary Chair

Goal: Half of Delawareans have a library card… help us reach 100% to achieve a Stronger Delaware!

In Delaware, only 52% of children read at grade level by third grade; that number drops to 37% in 17 low income zip codes, including Wilmington, Dover and Western/Central Sussex County. Children who are competent and passionate readers by 3rd grade have a strong foundation for success in school and in life!

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

In Delaware’s Imagination Library program, children ages birth up to their 5th birthday receive a FREE book in the mail each month. The purpose is to instill the habit of reading, and create the library habit, too!

This program is brought to you by Delaware Libraries, a program of First Lady Tracey Quillen Carney’s First Chance initiative.

Register at DelawareLibraries.org/Imagination.

Children who read succeed! Continue to read to your children every day in addition to assisting them in building their own reading skills. Once kids develop a reading passion, they devour books like potato chips!

  • Kids who are first learning to read retain more information from listening to books read aloud than from reading them independently.
  • Reading aloud with kids helps build vocabulary, improves reading skills, and fosters a sense of closeness between parent and child.
