Amazon has announced it will end support for Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets released in 2012 or earlier, with the cutoff date set for May 20, 2026.  This means affected devices will no longer be able to borrow or download new books after that date.

Devices Affected

  • Kindle models: 1st Gen (2007), Kindle 2, Kindle DX/DX Graphite, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle 4, Kindle Touch, Kindle 5, 1st Gen Kindle Paperwhite
  • Kindle Fire tablets: 1st Gen, 2nd Gen, Kindle Fire HD 7, Kindle Fire HD 8.9

These devices, some over 14 years old, will still be able to read books already downloaded before the cutoff, and their libraries can be accessed via the free Kindle app, Kindle for Web, or newer Kindle hardware.

What Happens After May 20, 2026

  • Factory reset or deregistration will make reactivation impossible.
  • Devices may still power on and display pre-loaded content, but they will lose seamless integration with Amazon’s ecosystem

Amazon says the change is due to advancements in screen resolution, processing speed, battery life, and accessibility features in newer devices, and that these older models have been supported for at least 14 years.

Incentives for Upgrading:
Amazon is offering:

  • 20% discount on a new Kindle until June 20, 2026
  • $20 e-book credit for affected users
  • Promotional codes for select current Kindle models

Alternatives:

  • Upgrade to a newer Kindle (e.g., Kindle Colorsoft) for full modern features.
  • Use the Kindle app on a phone/tablet or Kindle for Web to keep your library accessible.
  • Consider used or older models if you prefer lower-cost options.

Bottom line: If you own one of the listed older devices, you can still read your existing books, but you’ll need to upgrade to continue reading new content from Libby.
