Using Ask a Librarian

Using Ask A Librarian

Once you enter your question and click “Connect,” a librarian will be with you shortly (usually within 1-2 minutes). This is a global, cooperative service staffed by reference librarians from Delaware as well as other participating states and countries.

Good to know:

You may be chatting with a librarian from another county or state who, for your privacy, can’t access your personal library account related to overdues, renewals and other patron account activity. Most questions can be addressed through our chat service, however. If your question is best answered by your home library, you may have the option to have it sent to your library for a follow up through email.

Our librarians can assist you in finding specific contact information for your local library, or you may find it here.

  • Enter your question and any other optional information and then click the “connect” button. During certain times of the day, librarians are busy! The average wait time is 1-2 minutes.
  • Please don’t use your browser’s “back” button.
  • Be informal, but courteous. Be respectful. If you use abusive language or deliberately waste librarian effort in a way that denies service to others, we will end the session.
  • Use short replies and hit the “send” button between sentences.
  • The average session lasts 15-20 minutes. Some questions require us to search a bit (and email follow up is an option).
  • If you have to leave the computer, please politely let us know. A simple “Thanks, I need to go now but please e-mail me the answer” will be fine. Please make sure we have your correct email address!
  • To receive transcripts and follow-up emails, please ensure you are able to receive emails from
